Sony WM-EX610 Fault
A common fault with the Sony WM-EX610 is that the auto shut-off mechanism triggers a few seconds after playing a tape. This problem starts intermittently and gradually worsens until the unit does not play at all.
Removing the PCB provides access to the mechanism; unfortunately, there are solder points, which secures the PCB, and they require removal first. There are six solder points for the ribbon cable that connects the playback head to the PCB. There are four solder points for the motor, and four points in total for the two tape sensor switches. There are also two points for the auto reverse solenoid. With the solder cleanly removed, the PCB detaches from the chassis.
Motor Torque
The motor driver is responsible for sensing the load. When the tape reaches the end it senses a higher load and will switch off or auto reverse. A worn motor will not have the pulling power and the driver chip will initiate a shutdown.
Solenoid
Here is a close-up profile of the solenoid responsible for the auto reverse mechanism. The direction the tape is pulled is determined by the pinch rollers. This small solenoid with a coil wound around it engages the necessary pinch roller and the relevant cogwheels for the tape-winding spool.
