Sony WM-EX610 Motor
The Sony WM-EX610 uses the 0Z153D motor (M901) for the tape drive function.
Motor Drive
Occasionally, sometimes these motors fail by losing their torque. When this happens, the tape tries to play for a few seconds but then shuts off, followed by four beeps. There could be a number of reasons, one of which is that the magnets may have lost their strength; however, it could be a fault with the driver chip as well.
Belt Path
Unfortunately, since the replacement parts are not readily available, many people sell them on auction sites such as eBay. It is still one of the best places to source second hand parts.
In this image, you can see the belt path around the pulleys, which should help if you forget!
Drive Belt
In this view, you can see that the drive belt goes under the battery terminal plate. It is often better to remove this plate before fitting a new drive belt. Removal of the plate requires removing the solder from one point.
Driver Chip
This is the motor driver and power management chip in a closed loop servo system. The power management provides very short pulses of power to energise the motor coils. As a result, this motor can operate for many hours on a single AA battery.
