Sony WM-EX610 Tape Deck
The WM-EX610 has a metal tape deck and chassis, and the construction is precise and finely engineered. Due to space restrictions, these walkmans do not have a head that rotates, as it would require a motor drive and additional assembly. Instead, they have designed the head to detect all the tracks on the complete width of the tape. Hence, this head picks up four tracks.
As you can see, when the cassette lid is closed, the distance between the capstan and pinch roller is very small. To engage the capstan to the pinch roller, a very short movement is required, achieved through mechanical means, instead of motors or solenoids.
