Sony WM-EX610 Inside

Inside the Sony WM-EX674, you can see a green coloured Printed Circuit Board (PCB) designed and manufactured to high standards in Malaysia. It is amazing to think that they have managed to fit the tape transport mechanism, PCB, and motor, and still find space for the rechargeable battery.

On this side of the PCB, you can see the surface-mount devices (SMD) such as the micro-miniature control switches, voltage regulator ICs, and the motor driver IC. The audio IC and the microcontroller IC are on the other side of the PCB. There are many test points on this PCB, and you can hook up your oscilloscope channels to them to see the waveform patterns, which is very useful for diagnostic purposes. One of the great things about these Sony products is that the service manuals are very thorough and useful for repair purposes.

PCB

The inside looks very much like the WM-EX674 with the same choice and arrangement of the components. The belt size and capstan pulleys also appear to be the same as well.

The PCB manufacturing origin is in Malaysia. All the excellent electronics goods come from there of course.

SMD Switches

These SMD switches are very delicate and can remain stuck if too much pressure is applied. Replacement switches are available but they can be very difficult to solder due to the small size.
