With the battery cover off, you can see the compartment. This toy requires three "D" size batteries. With these batteries, I can get a couple of hours play research time with it. However, it all depends upon the amount of laser firing programming you do with it. When the batteries start to deplete, it can become slow and erratic, same as the adult playing with it.

The manufacturer recommends you use alkaline batteries, and they do not recommend the use of rechargeable batteries.

If you are buying a second-hand one on eBay, you might find that the batteries may have leaked resulting in corroded terminals. Perhaps this is an intelligent question to ask the seller before you bid.
